Common GroundThe Argument Reset

Take turns. Read each prompt slowly. Do not interrupt the answer.

  1. 01What happened was…
  2. 02The story I started telling myself was…
  3. 03What I felt underneath that was…
  4. 04What I need you to understand is…
  5. 05One next step that would help is…
Pause if either person feels unsafe or overwhelmed.

How to use it

Structure the moment without turning it into a contest.

01

Pause on purpose

Choose a specific time to return if either person needs a break. A pause works best when it is not an unexplained exit.

02

Take turns

One person completes all five prompts while the other listens. Then switch. Reflect back what you heard before responding.

03

Keep the goal small

A useful ending can be one request, one repair, or one next conversation—not a complete solution to the relationship.

Designed for everyday relationship communication

This tool is not therapy, crisis support, or appropriate for situations involving abuse, coercion, threats, stalking, or immediate danger. If you feel unsafe, prioritize safety and contact qualified local support or emergency services.
